How to Find a Great DJ

by Kelly Suit

KC Enterprises Disc Jockey and Photography

You've gotten the ring, the dress, and reserved your ceremony location.  You've selected the reception site and discussed your menu with your caterer.  You may have made other decisions by now as well (flowers, cake, photographer, etc.), but you have come to the point were you need to choose the Disc Jockey.  This is a very important decision when you take in to account that no other vendor has as much opportunity to make or break your reception.  The question you are asking yourself now is how do I find the entertainer that that best suits my needs and I can trust to do a great job.

There are many ways to find the right DJ for you.  One of the best ways is to go with a DJ that you have already seen and liked.  Nothing is better then having first hand knowledge of exactly what you are getting with your entertainer.  If you haven't seen any DJ's that seemed right for you, ask you friends, family, and co-workers for recommendations.  Chances are that someone has had or seen a DJ that left a good impression.  On the chance that no one can produce a referral, try asking some of the other vendors that you have hired for a recommendation.   Using a search engine or the yellow pages to get more choices is also available, but remember that not all DJ's are alike and if you haven't received their name through referral be cautious before making a decision.  I strongly suggest talking to two or three entertainers before making your final decision.

After you select a few DJ's that seem promising, make an appointment to meet them in person.  This is very important because you need to get a feel if this person is a good match for your personality.  Your DJ should be friendly and enthusiastic about your wedding.  They should be able to offer suggestions on what they can do to help make your reception unique and enjoyable.  Your DJ is going to be responsible for the success or failure of your reception, so make sure that you feel this person handles them self in a professional manner, shows up on time for your meeting, and gives you a sense of peace about your decision.

Make sure that your DJ provides you a copy of the contract and that it is specified that they will be the DJ that does your reception from start to finish.  Be concerned if your disc jockey won't put this in writing.  You don't want to get a different Disc Jockey at your wedding or have your entertainer leave in the middle of the reception and have another DJ finish.  Ask your DJ the 10 questions  that we have provided.

Finally don't let price be the most important consideration when choosing your entertainment.  There is a reason why the cheapest DJ is the cheapest.  You usually get what you pay for and while the highest price doesn't guarantee the best entertainment, talent and quality do cost more.  No price is a good price if you don't get what you pay for.  This is a once in a lifetime occasion, let your heart be the determining factor and not your wallet.  Congratulations and Best Wishes!
